Those who hear our prayers? Charles Thursday, July 29, 2004

Question:

I read a recent question asking if demons could hear silent prayers, to which you also mentioned you didn't believe they could hear audible ones.

I have this question though, and it bugs me. If I pray to the Lord for example for the strengthening of the Church on earth, saying an Our Father, I normally follow that with asking Mary's intercession in the matter and say a Hail Mary (this prayer is always silent). The thing is though, I don't want to repeat the entire request and so I just ask Mary to intercede with my request, as though she is listening to my prayer to the Lord.

Maybe I'm being wacky, and I have no idea where the wackiness is, but it seems to me that if I permit any of the saints to hear my prayer to the Lord, they thereby are granted access and don't have to repeat for every intercessor I might call on. My approach is that even if they do not hear, what I would have no problem with them hearing, they by my permission could ask the Lord of it and then intercede.

It just seems to me that if a saint can hear a silent prayer, they can also hear that I want to intercede as to what I just asked the Lord too. I don't know, I just like to think that all of Heaven can hear my prayer if I will them in any way to have access. I pray it as though the Lord is there, I ask Him, and they are there to then afterwards beseech the Lord of what they just heard.

I don't know how I got started doing some prayer this way, but as odd as it sounds to describe I can't help but think none of those in Heaven have a problem with it. Your thoughts? I've been meaning to ask this of somebody for quite a while and I've just never been seen the opportunity till now. I would hate not getting intercession simply because I might have made a request this way.

Another example: commonly on spotting a road accident will pray something to the effect to the Lord that I wish him to grant what all those involved need and then I ask Mary to intercede. Thank you.

Dear Charles:

If I understand you correctly you are praying to God and then ask for Mary's intercession without repeating the original intention.

This is no problem.

As just one example, in spiritual warfare one of the principles is to pray to God adding this phrase (in bold italics) to the prayer:

Dear heavenly Father, with the intercessions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, Blessed St. Michael the Archangel, and all the saints and angels in heaven and holy in the power of the Name of your Son, we ask you Father to help our dear friend who is going through such trials right now. Amen.

Or...

Dear heavenly Father, we come to you asking for help with our dear friend who is in trouble. Please help her Lord, she feels so alone right now. Help her to see that you are with her and have never abandoned her. We ask these things Lord with the intercessions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, Blessed St. Michael the Archangel, and all the saints and angels in heaven and holy in the power of the Name of your Son. Amen

This prayer is speaking directly to the Father, but adding the intercessions of the saints at the same time. This prayer technique is laudable and powerful.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
