Question:

Is it possible for people who work in jobs or careers where they are in contact with people who have psychological and/or spiritual problems to also develop spiritual problems themselves at some point? I'm talking about jobs such as law enforcement, psychologists, social workers, etc.

Also if an individual works in a profession that goes against their personal ethics and moral code can this also cause some sort of spiritual contamination? A good example would be someone who works as a nurse at an abortion clinic.

I have a good friend who used to be in law enforcement and another who is a criminal defense attorney. Both have described to me how their jobs have negatively impacted their lives over the years. The friend of mind who is an attorney is the one I'm really worried about. He has told me that at times he feels as if something has taken over his mind and that he feels like he is going crazy. I myself have seen frightening personality changes in him that are completely out of character for him. He told me that in his early years of practicing criminal law he could compartmentalize his work life and personal life because to him it was only a role but that now it is starting to spill into his personal life.

I'm not in any way diagnosing his problem or playing doctor but I just want to know in general if it is possible for spiritual problems to develop in these situations? I basically just listen, keep my mouth shut, and pray for these 2 friends. I just want to know what your opinion is.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Stacey:

It is certainly possible that people in certain professions who may come into repeated contact with people who may be demonized can end up having spiritual problems themselves. Such professionals, or any other people working with those who may be demonized, should pray a protection prayer every day before going to work, and when needed during work.

Some professions such as law enforcement expose the officer to the worst of society. The stress and the psychological assault that law enforcement officers must endure can, in some circumstances, make them vulnerable to spiritual harassment and attack.

A criminal defense attorney can go through a similar stress and psychological assault as a police officer. In addition can be the burden of getting a client acquitted when the lawyer knows that the client is actually guilty. That sense of guilt and stress increases dramatically when that client commits another crime (especially it is is murder or rape) after the attorney got the guy off. All this stress and compartmentalization can, in some cases, make the attorney vulnerable to spiritual harassment or attack.

Regardless of the reasons why, the things you describe in your observations of your attorney friend are of concern. His profesison may not be the cause, but nevertheless his symptoms are something that should be investigated. He should see a psychologist as this can be psychological. He should also pray in a spiritual warfare fashion. If his own prayers do not lead to some relief and the psychological approach offers no relief either, then a spiritual approach ought to be considered with a Deliverance Counselor.

The Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance, linked below, ought to be followed and if needed, to ask for a Personal Consultation.

We will be praying for this attorney.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
