Question:

I understand what you are saying and I would follow your advice, but I feel like I must help him. I am worried that nobody like me will ever again come into his life again and he will go down the path of perdition. I can be a very blunt person and can wake people up. I am pretty sure that I am better at telling it like it is than most people, and he will never encounter anybody like me again. So if I terminate, he will continue on the same destructive path, but if I am at least there, I can alert him to the danger he is putting his soul in. In a big city, a very liberal city that strongly opposes Christianity and especially Catholicism and is put off by even the appearance of it, I think that I am the only person he will ever meet that will do this.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Katie:

I am afraid that your post here confirms and proves that you need to terminate the relationship with this therapist immediately. In fact, if this therapist knows about these feelings and thoughts that you have told me, then ethical standards will likely require him to refer you to another therapist as no therapeutic effect is possible anymore with him.

To put it bluntly, you are not indispensable. God does not need you to deal with this man. As Jesus said, God can raise up a rock to do His will. To say that you are the only one this man will meet who can help him is a pathological pride and delusion on your part. This attitude disqualifies you to be of help to this man.

Therapy is not possible with this therapist. In addition you are developing a pathological attachment to this man. Please terminate your relationship with this person before you or he or both of you are hurt.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
