How does someone become possessed? Renee Sunday, January 11, 2009

Question:

I was watching youtube (don't laugh !) about real exorcisms. This is because of a dream or two my friend has had of screaming in the middle of the nite that scared her I cam across this.

first of all, how did possessions happen?

secondly, is there a spiritual danger watching these?

Thanks!
Renee

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Renee:

I advise that you not watch these videos of exorcisms. To begin with those who perform exorcisms and post the video to the public are unethical and not to be trusted. Most likely what they did is not what should be done to help the poor person (assuming the video is legit in the first place).

Secondly, watching these sorts of videos, and movies like "The Exorcism" can make some people vulnerable to demonic attack. It is best to avoid such things.

People can become possessed by involvement in the occult, involvement in lifestyles of sin, or other actions that a person chooses to do that opens doors for the demonic to harass them and eventually possess them. It is also possible for innocent people to be possessed, often through family curses, parents dedicating their child to Satan, and such things. The most famous case of exorcism involved a father who cursed and damned his daughter.

Also, please do not try to diagnosis, or even speculate about these things. You are not qualified to interpret your friend's experience. As for dreams, most dreams are just dreams where the subconscious works out anxieties, fears, stresses in a creative way through a dream.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
