Question:

I recently adopted a dog. She's 2.5 yrs old. She's difficult as many adopted animals are. But she's mostly quiet and friendly. She was very excitable around new people, but loves them. She, however, had been a pain in the butt when my friend R, (who is a fabulous Catholic) and I tried to pray. We chalked it up to her being young and unaccustomed to the behavior.

However, I took her to a local Abbey for sledding and she started to bark at my friends J and B, who are very holy men seriously examining the priesthood.

I decided to ask one of the Benedictines to bless her. I brought her to Father and we talked for a bit. She was fine. As he started the blessing she growled in a way that was unnatural and unearthly. It was bone-chilling and frightened everyone around. It wasn't of this world, anyone there will testify to that. The priest turned pale and went from a simple English prayer to a Latin one.

The dog is a different dog now. She's quiet and relaxed in the presence of my Catholic friends.

This shook me becuase it could of been from the devil. I want to protect myself from anything evil. I don't know how to look for this stuff and I had lived with my dog for 3 weeks.

What further can I do to protect myself from the devil and evil spirits?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Autumn:

From your description it sounds like there may have been a demon attached to this dog, which was cast out when the Priest prayed.

The best way to protect yourself from evil spirits is to live a good, loyal, and devout Catholic life -- frequent confession (at least monthly), Sunday Mass (Daily Mass if possible), reception of the Eucharist at each Mass if you are properly disposed, prayers and devotions, good works of charity, bible reading and study, study of the catechism, reading the saints -- all the things that good devout Catholics do.

This does not mean the devil won't bother you. He will see your good faith and may try to ruin it. The Bible tells us to resist the devil and he will flee. Spiritual Warfare prayers come in handy on this level. You will find a link to our Catalog below.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
