Twilight series George Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Question:

I have friends who are huge Twilight fans. Twilight is a series of books and a movie about a human in love with a vampire. I personally don't know anything about it because I refuse to bring this type of poison into my home but these friends feel there is nothing wrong with it. Is this something a Catholic family should be watching or reading?

Dear George:

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I have changed your name to George. The rules of posting a question here is that you must use a normal name, not a "handle". The name does not have to be your own, but it must be a normal name. Thanks.

Twilight is not prudent reading (or viewing) for Christians. For a human being to have a love interest in a vampire is smacking against the perversion of necrophilia (sex with dead people).

In addition, vampires by definition are evil. To portray vampires in a positive light, especially when a vampire becomes a love interest, is to portray evil in a positive light.

St. Paul instructs us to " Abstain from every appearance of evil" (1 Thess 5:22). We are not only to avoid evil itself, but even from the "appearance" of evil.

St. Paul also teaches "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Php 4:8).

This book series hardly qualifies as something pure, lovely, gracious, and excellent. It is rather part of the Culture of Death that Pope John Paul II warned us about, and more it is glorifying that Culture of Death and attempting to make it more palatable.

Some thirty- nine years ago, or there-abouts, there was a soap opera that did this same thing called "Dark Shadows". This book may be a rip off of the story from nearly forty years ago.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
