Possible Incorrect Statement jb Sunday, June 7, 2009

Question:

Brother Ignatius Mary:

In a group setting re: a class being offered during Lent titled Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues. I was during a group discussion to make the following statement. I now realize that it could be wrong in thought. Please Clarify.

I stated that we should own our sins and such as pride and and that we should also own the virtues that go with them such as humility. I also stated that we have the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Beatitudes to help us work with both the sin and the virtue. Am I wrong in my thinking. Thank you.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear JB:

Well, it depends on what you mean by "own". If you mean that we need to take responsibility for our sins (which is what is meant by the old saying, "own up to"), then yes, we are to own up to our sins, that is, take responsibility for those sins -- to repent of them, ask forgiveness for them, and try not to do them again.

The virtues we need to "own" in the sense that we are to take responsibility to seek them, cultivate them, and practice them; make them part of ourselves.

We do have the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit outlined in Isaiah 11:2 and the Beatitudes to give us the grace to avoid sin and to attain and develop and perfect the virtues.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
