Denying the wheat-allergic girl the Eucharist story	Rosa	Wednesday, August 25, 2004
Question: The story of the mother complaining because her wheat-allergic daughter can't recieve the Host is all over the place, and many of my good Catholic friends have been scandalized by it. I, for one, don't understand why she doesn't let her daughter recieve the Precious Blood, it's the same Jesus and there's no wheat in wine. But anyway. The most common question seems to be why can't the Host just be made out of rice. I know that the substance matters, and that if the Church decides it doesn't have to be wheat, we might as well have priests consecrating pizza and pepsi. And that Jesus used bread, and nothing else, so we should immitate Him. Are there any other reasons why rice hosts are out of the question? Is this in some sort of a document somewhere that I can quote from?
Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+ Dear Rosa: Your Catholic friends need to understand that what they read in the Newspapers is almost always wrong when it comes to the Catholic Church. The media, as usual, has made a controversy out of nothing. This little girl is not being denied the Eucharist. The whole gluten issue can be totally and utterly avoided by the girl receiving the Eucharist from the consecrated wine. There is no need to argue or prove anything about the nature of the "bread" in this matter. Such arguments are based on misplaced devotion or a misunderstanding of the nature of the Eucharist. Since each species of the Eucharist is 100% the body, blood, soul, and divinity of our Lord the solution is simple and there need not be any person with such sensitivity who EVER needs to think twice about the gluten issue -- merely receive our Lord from the species of wine. One misses out on nothing by receiving the consecrated wine alone. Controversy ended and never should have happened in the first place. God Bless, Bro.
