Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius,

Last night, me and my wife engaged in mutual stimulation and caressing of each other's body. However, our mutual stimulation, did not lead to orgasm/ejaculation, did not lead to sexual intercourse, and was not done merely to avoid pregnancy. We just seemed to have been carried away by our emotions and simply got tired of it in the end.

My question is: did we commit a sin in doing this?

Thanks and God bless.

Dear Ward:

In my opinion there is nothing sinful in what you describe. Caresses, backrubs, massages, even sexual massage, as long as not a substitute for coitus or a strategy to prevent pregnancy comes into the category of marital intimacy. Intimacy does not have to be intercourse, and sometimes is all a couple has in the case of physical incapacity.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
