Miracle of the Holy Light Genny Sunday, December 25, 2011

Question:

Merry Christmas dear brother,

I have come across this site with regards to the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem which states that a miracle occurs every Holy Saturday ( the Eastern Orthodox claim their date defers from that of the Roman Catholic Church and this miracle proves they are more on the right track). I have seen youtube videos on this too. This light does not burn and somehow magically just spreads to all the candles present there. There seems to be a ball of light floating among the crowd. your thoughts on this would be helpful.
here is the link explaning this - http://www.holyfire.org/eng/
and this is the youtube link I checked out- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=difbIzktBSM

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), L.Th., D.D.

Dear Genny:

This video is utterly unconvincing. From the video it seems clear to me that at best this yellow ball of light is a reflection on the lens of the camera. The video proves nothing.

We must remember that even if this phenomena is happening to those present, it does not mean that it automatically comes from God. The bible says that even Satan can appear as an angel of light.

If the light is genuine it means nothing as to verify the date of Easter, for pete sake.

The real problem here is that the Eastern Orthodox are claiming "their" date for Easter is better than the Catholic Church. It is for scientific historical examination to determine the actual date.

But, the actual date does not matter. The fact is that the Orthodox do not have the authority to determine anything of the faith because they split from the True Church under the Pope. It is only the True Church under the Pope who has the authority given by Christ to determine the faith, including dates for Christmas, Easter, the Sabbath, etc.

Since the Orthodox have no universal authority I take no notice of what they say about anything that is contrary to Catholic teaching.

With that said, I do not know of the Eastern Catholics celebrate Easter on the same date as the Western Church. If they don't then it is because the Pope allows it.

The exact date is not important. For example, Christmas is not the day Christ was born. It doesn't matter. What is important is the celebration of the Nativity and the Resurrection of Christ regardless of what date is set by the Church.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
