Projected Pictures During Scripture Readings at Mass Deacon Larry Tuesday, March 4, 2014

Question:

I have been asked if it is permitted to project pictures at Mass during the reading of Sacred Scripture. Specifically the question has to do with the Easter Vigil readings. The music director says that this isn't any different from having the Scripture words on the screen. Is there any Church statement or guidelines regarding this practice?

Thank you for your helpful responses to the many questions you get. Continued blessings on your work.

Dear Deacon:

No, the Church does not have any specific document concerning this topic that I am aware. The problem is immature people think they can get by with anything that is not specifically covered by an official document.

It is not possible for the Church to speak to every issue as the resulting book would be so big as to knock the earth off its axis. Instead mother Church does what all parents are suppose to do — teach their children the principles the faith and morals, and how to think, so that when they come up against something their parents did not specifically mention, the child will have the tools to make the right decision. For example, the Church does not specifically say that one cannot do jumping jacks during the Consecration, but anyone with an IQ above 25 and even a tacit knowledge of Church principles ought to know without any official documents that jumping jacks are not appropriate during any part of the Mass let alone during the Consecration.

In the case you are dealing with, the Church has taught us the principle of the sacred and how only sacred gestures and activities belong in the Holy Mass. Putting up pictures on a screen or Scripture reading on a screen is decidedly a folk and vulgar (meaning common as opposed to Sacred) thing to do. That alone is sufficient to not do such a thing.

Frankly, a music director has an obligation to know the difference between the Sacred and the vulgar, by virtue of his job which requires him to use only Sacred music, and not folk or vulgar (common) music. Since this music director obviously does not know the different he should be either fired or re-educated.

The prohibition of using a screen to broadcast Lenten Readings, picture, Scripture readings, or anything else on a screen during Mass is found in the principles of the Sacred.

We will pray for you and the people involved, because frankly the immature will not accept this point-of-view.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
