Mass Intention Susan Sunday, May 18, 2014

Question:

Greetings in Christ!

Someone has asked to me to offer a mass for him. Can I offer this intention silently during the mass or should it be read out during the mass as is the practice? Is there any difference?

Thanks.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Susan:

You can do either — ask the parish priest to say a Mass for your friend, or you yourself offering the Mass for your friend as often as you wish. I usually offer a private intention right after the Consecration of the Host and before the Consecration of the Blood as in, "Father, I offer this Mass for _______." The only difference in this is that one announces the Mass intention publicly, usually in the bulletin, and the other does not. There is no difference spiritually.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
