Question:

Dear Br. Ignatius,
I'm catholic and a classical musician. I wonder if it is OK for a catholic to play and perform pieces such as G. Bizet: Carmen, C. Debussy: Syrinx, Jules Mouquet - La flute de Pan, Ian Clarke: Hypnosis…

What is troubling me is the spiritual background of these pieces and authors. If they were inspired not by the Holy Spirit but by the other spirit?

God bless

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Christian:

It is perfectly okay to listen to or perform Classical music. As the Greeks taught, beauty is connection with the divine. Beauty is of God. Unless a piece as been specifically composed to create altered states of consciousness, as in much New Age music, some hard rock and medal, etc. it is okay.

The other criteria for a Christian is that the music and lyrics, if any, must not appeal to evil or anything contrary to Christianity.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
