Question Title Posted By Question Date
The presences of my deceased mother Jess Monday, March 5, 2018

Question:

Bro Ignatius my mother recently passed away and it has been roughly 3 days. When I was allowed to see her in her house the temple body she lived in was still warm but she was pronounced dead already. I knelled down and put my hands on her head and gave her 1 our father, 1 hail Mary and a glory be then asked Jesus to welcome her into the kingdom.

I Feel her presence with me and feel her speaking to me not with a literal voice but i can feel her presence strong over me and almost touching me. in comparison when my father died 13 years ago i did not feel this.

What is the church's teachings on this ? I understand there would be some psychology involved as well but her presence is very very strong over me.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Jess:

My condolences about your mother's death. Your experience may indeed be psychological, but it is also possible that God is allowing your mother to watch over you and comfort you in an intimate way. This is not unusual in the days or weeks after a loved one dies.

There is no specific teaching from the Church on this, but the experiences of many people, and the theological understandings concerning this sort of experience suggest that this is possible.

We will pray for your mother's repose and praise God that she is so intimately comforting you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
